Jacquelyn Mitchard's Indian Fry Bread
Look Both Ways by Jacquelyn Mitchard (Penguin/Razorbill, March, 2009), 256 pages, Grades 7 and Up

Look Both Ways continues the story of Mallory and Merry, begun in the first novel of The Midnight Twins trilogy. Mirror-image twins born a minute before and a minute after midnight on New Year's Eve, they're trapped in a near-fatal fire on the night they turn thirteen. Their "twin telepathy" that has allowed them to"talk without words" all their lives turns into a terrifying psychic gift to see the heart of evil in their small rural town. Mallory can see only the future; Merry can see only the past. But when they put their visions together, they learn that Mallory's best friend, Eden, is the embodiment of an ancient Indian legend. A shape-shifter, Eden must give up her life as an ordinary girl and serve her clan as medicine woman. Whoever should see Eden in her shape as a white panther is doomed to bad luck; but, as Mallory learns, anyone who actually sees her transform must die. How can the twins save Eden, who wants to run from her ancient destiny, without risking their own lives?

When Mallory attends the autumn pow-pow at her best friend's farm, she meets Eden's older brother, home from boarding school -- a handsome, bewitching older boy who will turn out to be far more than Mallory's first real crush. One of the many savory foods she tries is fry bread, a simple delicacy beloved of all the tribes of the Algonquin nation.
2 cups baking mix, such as Bisquick
2/3 cup milk
3-4 cups vegetable oil
Toppings: powdered sugar, granulated sugar and cinnamon, honey or jam
1. In a medium bowl, combine the baking mix and milk. Place dough on floured board, knead a few times and roll the dough out to approximately 1/4 inch thickness. Let rest for five minutes.
2. Cut dough into shapes using cookie cutters, clean jelly jars, juice glasses, or a pizza cutter.
3. In a large heavy skillet or deep fryer, heat oil to 400 degrees F. Drop dough carefully into oil and fry, turning once, for 1-2 minutes or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Serve warm and sprinkle with powdered sugar or sugar and cinnamon or dab with honey or jam.
Yield 10-12 (2 1/2 inch) pieces
